The Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum will host Uncommon Folk: Traditional Folk Art from the SC State Museum Collection. More than 50 works from the state collection will be on display, including practical items such as baskets, stoneware and quilts, as well as decorative items, including paintings, etchings and whimsical creations. A guided tour by the exhibits’ curator, Paul Matheny of the South Carolina State Museum, will be offered at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 20. The tour is free and open to the public. Citizens Police Academy Session 17

Applications accepted until 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 21

Session begins Monday, January 5

Applications are being accepted for the 17th Citizens Police Academy session, which begins January 5. Class meets each Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. for 10 weeks, with graduation on March 16. Topics include crime scene investigation, K-9, emergency vehicle operations and simulated firearms training. Class members also ride and work with Myrtle Beach police officers and staff for a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement. Applicants must be residents of Horry County and at least 21 years old. A valid driver’s license, a criminal history check and a driver’s license background check are required. Once accepted, applicants must attend at least eight of the 10 classes and complete at least 25 hours of ride-along and work-along experience to graduate. Applications are available at the Ted C. Solid waste and recycling will be collected as usual in Zone 1 and Zone 2 on Monday and Tuesday, November 24 and 25. However, both Zone 3 and Zone 4 will be serviced Wednesday, November 26. Coats for Kids Campaign – Coast RTA

The City of Myrtle Beach is again participating in the Coast RTA’s Coats for Kids Campaign. Collection boxes are available at City Hall, the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center and the Law Enforcement Center Annex. Donations of clean, used coats, blankets, sweaters, hats and gloves are accepted. The boxes will remain at all three locations through Friday, December 12.

Weight and fitness equipment has been moved to the Base Recreation Center while Crabtree Gymnasium is closed for expansion and renovation. Crabtree’s classes also are being taught at the Base Recreation Center, including Evening Cardio Kickboxing, Xpress Fitness Workout, Fitness Analysis Program, Personal Training with Crabtree Crew and Senior Fitness. To accommodate these new uses, the Base Recreation Center’s hours have been expanded. The center is now open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday; and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday. Please note that the Base Recreation Center does not have locker rooms or showers.

Step/Cardio Salsa: Burn calories and get in shape the energetic way! YOUTH PROGRAMS

Open Indoor Soccer: (Ages 16 and up) Players of all abilities are encouraged to come out for fun and fitness. Class meets on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. through November 19. Free for members and $3 daily fee for non-members.

5 Star Basketball: (Ages 5-15) This class focuses on complete skill development through individual and group instruction. The key elements include Attitude, Teamwork, Offense, Defense and Total Ball Control. The Rookies meet Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Pros meet Monday and Wednesday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and the All-Stars meet Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Check the skills chart at the front desk to determine in which level you should register. Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Shooting Stars: (Ages 8-15) Start with the fundamentals of shooting and work toward more advanced skills. Individual instruction and coaching techniques are used to insure progress for each athlete. Class meets Monday from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. Fees: $5 City Resident / $8 Non-City Resident.

City Spikers Volleyball: (Ages 8-11 / 12-15) Looking for a great sport to love? The City Spikers are waiting for you. Coach Linda will teach you the skills you will need to succeed in high school play or club ball. Ages 8-11 meet Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., and ages 12-15 meet Tuesday and Thursday from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Diamond Cutters Baseball or Softball: (Ages 5-7 / 8-11) The key to success is good fundamental skills. Get the tolls you need to compete next season! Coach Greg will combine drills and games to teach and reinforce strong fundamental skills in fielding, batting and base running. Ages 5 to 7 meet Monday and Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., and ages 8 to 11 meet Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Training Camp: (Ages 9-14). Do you want to get strong and fit and ready to play your favorite sport? You need Training Camp with Coach Greg! Drills, contests, swimming and running all combine to improve fitness, endurance, speed and agility. Gain the edge over your competition with Training Camp. Class meets Tuesday and Thursday, 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Running Rampage: (Ages 9-14) This class teaches running in a fun environment of challenging activities and team-based competition. Class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Fees: $10 City Resident / $17 Non-City Resident.

Fitness Foundations: (Girls Ages 9-12). Success in everything starts with a strong foundation! Get the skills you need to succeed-a healthy lifestyle of fun, fitness and healthy eating. Games, drills, contests, swimming, running, aerobics and more! Class meets Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Skate Clinic: Kids ages 8-11 learn to skate in a fun and safe atmosphere! Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Matt Hughes Skate Park behind Pepper Geddings. This is a free program, but registration at Pepper Geddings is required to participate. Helmets are required.

Karate: (Ages 5 & Over) Tae Kwon Do is a martial art that uses both the hands and feet. It is a sport that physically benefits the whole body. One can develop flexibility, stamina, motor skills, strength, energy, self-confidence and balance. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Classes are ongoing, with fees due at the start of each month. New members are always welcome. Fees: $7 City Resident / $12 Non-City Resident, monthly at the front desk, and $24 monthly to the instructor.

ADULT AND SENIOR PROGRAMS

Scrapping at the Rec: The staff from Scrapping at the Beach is offering a beginning class in scrap booking at Pepper Geddings Recreating Center. The class will meet Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. For more information call 918-2280.

Salsa Dancing: Try a new and fun way to exercise with the rhythm of the sunlight. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monthly Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Tai Chi: Tai Chi is a tradition of spiritual, martial and health exercise developed in China. Tai Chi is effective in developing balance, focus and coordination through graceful centered movements. This class requires minimal strain and is an excellent type of exercise for both young and old. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monthly Fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Training Squad: Tired of the same old humdrum workout? Check out the Training Squad. Our Drill Instructors take the squad through fun and strenuous exercises that burn fat, increase strength and improve endurance. Be prepared to head to the beach, the fields, the stadium or to the pool. The Drill Instructors will do whatever it takes to push toward strong bodies and strong lives! Classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. or 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. or Monday and Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. through December 6. Monthly Fees: $45 City Resident / $75 Non-City Resident.

Pilates: Come and enjoy fitness training and mind-body breathing connection information based on the method of Joseph Pilates. Build a longer, leaner and stronger body using mats, exercise balls and many unique movements. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. or Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Monthly fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

BOSU: Do you BOSU? Join the BOSU fitness class to increase your core strength and tone your abdominal and back muscles. Come find out what all the excitement is about! Class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:00 p.m., and Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monthly Fees: $10 City Resident / $17 Non-City Resident.

Learn to Run: This is a new class that is designed to teach you to run in a safe and effective manner. No previous running experience is necessary. Learn to build your strength and endurance through walking and running as well as some simple strength training. Class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. Monthly fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-City Resident.

Fitness Over 50: A fun and active workout geared just for our over 50 folks. Upbeat music, moderate impact activity and a group of folk from age 50-90 are the perfect combination for fun! Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Fees: $42 City Resident / $70 Non-City Resident for 24 visits. This class is on going, and new members are always welcome.

Cardio Circuit: Fast paced workout designed to strengthen and tone all major muscle groups. Cardio Circuit utilizes the principles of circuit training and interval training to get the most possible out of this intense 45-minute class. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. Monthly fees: $20 City Resident / $33 Non-city Resident. This class is on going and new members are always welcome.

Adult/Senior Women’s Volleyball: This is a special time for Senior Women to come out and play! Join our group for fun and fitness and some great volleyball play. Linda will be on hand to coach and encourage. Class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Free with membership of $3 per visit.

Open Play Volleyball: Players of all abilities are encouraged to come out for fun and fitness on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:45 p.m. Free for members and daily fee for non-members.

Lunch Time Adult Basketball: Looking for a good lunchtime workout? Join in for some highly competitive full court ball from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Free with membership or $3 per visit.

Volunteers are needed at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center to interact with the youth, help with recreation activities, do office work or contribute your specialty. Choose from a variety of times. Contact Linda at 918-2282 to find out how you can help.
