Food marathon helps area's hungry

    Tom O'Dare

For the sixth year, WAVE radio personality Scott Mann is camping at Broadway at the Beach to gather food for the area’s hungry residents.

Mann’s Marathon for Meals collects non-perishable food items for the Community Kitchen and Helping Hands of Myrtle Beach. He will stay in front of the visitor’s center until a trailer is full from top to bottom with food of all kinds.

The food marathon is but one of many charities Mann helps throughout the year. He says Myrtle Beach has been good to him and his family and wants to give back to the community in every way possible.

Each November, Mann packs up and heads to Broadway at the Beach until the trailer is full. These days, he stays in a fully-furnished camper that is donated for the occasion—a far cry from the little tent he started with six years ago.

Mann says this year’s donations have been good so far despite the downturn in the economy.

“People are realizing that it’s just not the homeless these days that need food,” he says. “People see that others are out of work and need food for their families.”

The Community Kitchen helped over 17,000 people over the year, Mann said. And with serving over 200 meals a day, it doesn’t take long to deplete the food pantry.

Food can be dropped off any time, day or night.
